Yesterday...
"No, no, this is how it goes," Azur said, snatching the datapad from Cantus as he plopped down next to him on the couch with his typical easy, cheerful manner and proceeded to re-write the lyrics that Cantus had been puzzling over for the last quarter of a millicycle with seemingly little effort.
Cantus didn't protest his friend's actions, mostly because he knew it wouldn't do any good, but shook his head in mild exasperation. "You know, you could have asked politely," he commented mildly. He couldn't help the slight smile that quirked at the corners of his lips, though. He was well used to his friend's quirks by now, and knew that his friend's alterations would undoubtedly improve the song. Besides, those lyrics had been driving him glitchy, and a brief break was welcome.
"And possibly be forced to watch you continue to wallow in lyrical mediocrity if you said 'no'? Delete the thought," Azur replied, unable to stop the smile forming on his own lips, amusement twinkling in his striking blue eyes. "I can't stand to see a friend suffering such an indignity."
Cantus just gave a soft sound of amusement, something between a 'heh' and a snort. "If I'd reused, you'd have just taken the pad anyway."
"True," his friend replied, his smile broadening, then offered the datapad back after making one final alteration. "Here, tell me what you think of that."
Cantus took the pad back and looked over the changes, smiling to himself at what he saw. He then picked up his instrument from where it had been resting against the arm of the couch next to him and played through the verse, singing the new lyrics as written. The result pleased him, and he did several more play throughs of the verse, trying different variations of tone and inflection until he found one that he thought worked the best. He then played through the entire song once, with the new lyrics and intonation, smiling at the way it flowed.
When he finally looked up from his instrument, he found Azur smirking cheerfully, reclined at the oposite end of the sofa from where he'd been listening with evident enjoyment. "Alright," Cantus admitted, with mock-reluctance, "I'll say it: you're brilliant."
"Of course I am," Azur replied, grinning.
"These fit the tone of the song so much beter," Cantus elaborated. "And they help smooth out the modulations so it flows better, especially right here." He pointed to a certain section of the song written out on the datapad.
"Exactly," Azur replied, smiling and nodding in confirmation. A smile that turned back to a cheerful smirk as he asked, "I mean, really, what would you do without me, Cantus?"
"Hmm, curl up and derezz, I expect," Cantus said, smirking right back. They looked at each other like that for a moment, before bursting out into simultanious, uproarous laughter.
